  • Jumper Cables- These are long thick insulated cables having toothy clips on both ends. To connect the two ends one positive and other negative. 


  • Power Source-either from a battery or some other vehicle 


There are two terminals in the car 


Positive Terminal- The bigger one of the two terminals and is usually red. 

Negative Terminal- This one is black and is attached to another clip. 


Attach the red cables first to the positive side of the battery and later attach the other end of the red one to the working battery. Next, clamp the black cable with the negative side of the working battery. However the jumper cable should match the size of the vehicle. For example a large truck, or car like an SUV might require 1- or 2- gauge cable as for a standard sedan the jump can be started easily by 4- or 6- gauge cables. 

Cautions when jump starting a car 

  • DO NOT JUMP DRY AND FROZEN BATTERIES.
  • DO NOT TOUCH CLIPS TOGETHER.
  • DO NOT JUMP WITH CORRODED OR VISIBLY DAMAGED BATTERIES.
  • READ THE MANUAL.
  • MAKE SURE BATTERY IS NOT LOW.

  1.  Start the engine with proper working battery 

Keep two cars as close as possible. Turn on the engine and pull that close to the dead battery. 

  1.  Open the Hood of each Car and Connect the batteries with jumper cable


  • Red to dead means connect red clip to positive terminal on battery of dead car

  • Red to Donor means connect red clip to positive terminal on battery of another car

  • Black to Donor means connecting a black clip to the negative terminal of another car. 

  • Black to Metal means connecting a black clip to one of the metal that holds the hood open and not directly next to the battery. 


  1.  Start the Car- allow it to run continuously for 15-20 minutes

Before starting take care the person in the donor vehicle should keep the speed around 3000rpm. Start your car right after cables are properly connected. And if the power is sufficient enough your car would now be able to start. 

  1.  Carefully disconnect the two batteries

Now disconnect the cables one by one and again for your safety do not join them together. Because that can possibly cause spark and can even lead to electrical damage. 

  1.  Inspect the condition of the cable after jumpstart 

Before putting away these cables keep in mind to carefully inspect them. And better to stay away from the poor quality copper wires and cheap quality cables.
